THOUGHTS ON THE WEDDING OF PRINCE WILLIAM OF WALES AND MISS CATHERINE MIDDLETON

I have just watched William & Kate exchange their vows before God, a packed congregation, and (it would appear) the whole world. What a delight it was to witness two young people so committed to each other, and to their duty to others. Both of them have recognised that they owe a duty to the whole nation; and they show that by performing official duties, by their charity work, and by William's work as an Air-Sea Rescue Pilot. Although they themselves would have preferred to have a quiet celebration with their friends, they recognised that the whole country had a stake in this marriage and gave us all a chance to share in their special day. Most of all, they chose to make their vows before God, recognising that (as the Bishop of London said) it is only with the help of his Holy Spirit that our relationships can be what they should be, and that it is the strength and resources God provides which enable us to carry on, even through the difficulties life throws at us.

This evidence of commitment and a sense of duty is so refreshing in an age which has seemed to be marked by self-centredness and living for the moment. I pray that the Royal Wedding will set the trend not just in the styling of bridal dresses and wedding hats, but in a renewed sense of enduring commitment in our relationships, and beyond them - to the community and the world of which we are a part.

May God's blessing be on them both, and grant them a long and happy life together.
